BROADSIDE

Design brief
I was tasked with making an illustration of one of two poems.
After sketching designs for the two poems assigned, I decided to work on the poem "Happiness" by Gabriella Leto

Sketches:

At this stage, I decided to sketch broken glass as I felt that it connected well with the poem and its meaning.

As I designed with the broken glass, I decided to take images out as they only made the poem a little lively. The title and some of the poem text were divided within the glass, to evoke the message that we are always looking to piece together factors of life to achieve happiness.

As I approached my final design, I experimented with placement and color.

Final Design

My final design consisted of little color usage to contrast the starry night in the background with the poem text and the title.

The title of the poem would be broken down in a path that would eventually lead the viewer to the poet's name, the title was colored with different levels of grayscale to connect it with the gleaming stars in the background.

Both the title and the poem texts are Times New Roman, the poet's name and translator's are Arial, as I wanted to keep it simple but different from the poem text to add contrast.

I chose a simple mockup that had few distractions in order to focus mostly on the poem.
